With wood pellet boilers, solar thermal panels and heat pumps becoming more and more popular in the UK, a new report suggests we as a nation are not ready for the 'drastic changes' needed in the next few years concerning the way both new and existing homes are heated.
The findings, published this week by the Royal Academy of Engineering suggest the UK can't meet it's 80% cut in CO2 by 2050 without coming away from conventional boilers, and quickly switching over to ground source heat pumps, wood-fired boilers and Micro Combined Heat and Power (MCHP) systems.

BRE has this week released its thoughts on how SAP methodology should be changed in line with the planned revision of Building Regulations in 2013; the next rung on the ladder as we aim for Zero Carbon houses by 2016.
There are several key proposed changes to the SAP process, the biggest alterations involve using geographical data (such as external temperatures, wind speeds and daylight hours), new emission factors and more complex Accredited Construction Details.
You can read more details about the proposed changes on our blog (Jan 2012).

Ambitions to extend Ecohomes in Scotland have suffered a blow this week.
The Guardian reports that only four homes have been sold on the site near Inverness since last August. There are still 28 units to sell - even though they are expected to cost less than a hundred pound in fuel bills every year.
In total there are 52 Ecohomes at Balvonie Braes - twenty were bought soon after the site was shown off to the public by Housing Associations and Shared Ownership deals, but since then interest in the houses has dwindled.

Further pressure is mounting on the UK Government to rethink it's plans to cut Feed-In-Tariffs.
According to today's Guardian, a group of Lib Dems is preparing to stand out against the proposals, which will effect the amount paid out to people who are having PV panels or wind turbines installed on their houses.
Earlier this month it was annouced that Feed-In-Tariffs may be dropped from 43p per kilowatt to 21p on all new installations after December 12th - but a definite decision will not be made until more than two weeks after this deadline has passed.

Following last week's announcement that Feed-In-Tariffs are to be halved in just over a month's time, a stream of charities, councils and industry leaders have started putting pressure on the Government to reconsider the proposals.
Friends of the Earth is threatening legal action against the Government, as it claims the consultancy timeframe for the decision is not legal. A decision will not be made until the end of December on changing FITs, however the cut-off date for new FIT registrations has been announced as December 17th - two weeks before consultation ends.
