What is Thermal Bridging Analysis?

With heat loss through building fabric now a key focus of building regulations, an efficient specification is key to compliance. However, perfectly insulated walls alone is not sufficient if heat can escape through corners, junctions and window surrounds, which is where thermal bridging occurs.

Thermal Bridging, also known as Psi Value, is part of the SAP and SBEM calculation, which is a building regulation requirement for new buildings. The combined lengths and heat losses of all thermal bridges are added into your calculations and this can make a large dent in your score if not dealt with properly.

Developers currently have three options:

1. Opt for an improved set of psi-values
The most common method is to use Accredited Construction Details, which will give you an average set of results. However, most insulation manufacturers now offer their own values and these will typically achieve better results in SAP.

2. Ignore thermal bridging
This will result in default figures being used making it unlikely you’ll comply with the Target Emission Rate.

3. Invest in your own psi-values
If you’re building lots of dwellings to the same specification, your own psi-values can be used to improve your calculations on all future sites.

Top Tips for Thermal Bridging

  • There is no specific regulation saying you must meet certain psi-value targets, however the worse your thermal bridging, the more likely the building will not comply with Building Regulations so don’t ignore it just because there’s no-one telling you to do it.
