Ecology Assessments help to limit and even enhance a development’s impact on wildlife and biodiversity.
Most planning authorities seek ecology surveys to prevent negative impact on species and habitats present across a site. An assessment can also consider enhancement, informing on how a development can actively improve local ecology.
Working with an approved network of qualified ecologists, we provide experienced assessors to complete your Ecological Impact Assessment (ECIA).
Where project design or delivery could impact habitats, species and ecosystems, we’ll advise on appropriate mitigation measures to support your planning application or BREEAM assessment.
Will my site need an Ecology Assessment?
Ecology Assessments are typically required to address planning policy or national legislation if a proposed development could affect protected species or biodiversity, or if a development is close to: sites of importance for nature conservation; biodiversity action plan habitats; or rivers and green corridors.
Ecology Assessments can also contribute to BREEAM LE02-LE05 or Home Quality Mark credits, demonstrating how a site meets specific standards for ecological protection.
Our Ecology Assessment service
Ecology Assessments are completed by independent ecologists, registered with the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM), delivering:
- Site survey – Completing a site visit and working with the local planning authority to identify and quantify the species and habitats present for a preliminary ecological appraisal (PEA).
- Recommendations – Sharing findings, outlining mitigation measures to prevent harm and protect ecology, and suggesting any areas where ecology can be further enhanced or supported.
- Design liaison – Discussing where project design and delivery can be adapted to limit potential effect on wildlife or biodiversity, to agree a final approach with your team.
- Report – Producing the final report to support your planning application.
What are Ecology Assessments?
An Ecological Impact Assessment (ECIA) seeks to limit negative impact by identifying, quantifying and evaluating the potential effects of a development on the ecology of a site. It reviews habitats, species and ecosystems found within the site.
Findings can influence design decisions or project parameters. A habitat survey can influence where trees must be retained, or where landscaping works may need to be diversified. Protected species surveys can also inform if remedial works are required before construction commences, to avoid nesting seasons or relocate endangered species, for example.
Understanding the sensitivities of a site allows developers to deliver projects sympathetically and with long-lasting ecological benefits.
